  • Author: Julian
  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

These Smash Burger Tacos combine the crispy, cheesy goodness of classic smash burgers with the convenience of soft flour tortillas for an easy, family-friendly meal. Ready in just 22 minutes with only 5 main ingredients, this recipe is perfect for a quick dinner that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) 80/20 ground beef
  • 46 slices American cheese (or cheddar/pepper jack as alternatives)
  • 810 small flour tortillas
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) butter
  • Pickles or sliced onions (optional but recommended)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Skillet and Warm Tortillas: Preheat your cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until it is smoking hot. Meanwhile, warm the tortillas by wrapping them in foil and placing them in a low oven set at 200°F (95°C) to keep them soft and pliable.
  2. Form and Smash Patties: Divide the ground beef into 8 equal balls, approximately 2 ounces (60g) each. Place one ball in the hot skillet and press it down firmly with a spatula or burger press until it is about ¼-inch thick. Hold the pressure for 10 seconds to ensure a good sear. Repeat this process with 3 to 4 patties at a time, making sure to leave space between each for even cooking.
  3. Cook Patties and Add Cheese: Cook the patties without moving them for 2 minutes until the edges become crispy and brown. Flip each patty, immediately place a slice of cheese on top, and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and the burger is cooked through.
  4. Toast Tortillas: In a small frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Toast each tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side until they are lightly golden and soft. Keep the tortillas warm by wrapping them in a clean kitchen towel.
  5. Assemble Tacos: Place two cheesy patties on each warmed tortilla. Add optional pickles or sliced onions as desired. Fold the tacos gently to avoid squishing the ingredients.
  6. Serve Immediately: Serve the smash burger tacos while the cheese is gooey and the tortillas are warm for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • You can substitute American cheese with cheddar or pepper jack for different flavor profiles.
  • Using a cast iron skillet is crucial to achieve a crispy crust on the patties.
  • Warming tortillas in the oven keeps them soft and easy to fold.
  • Adding pickles or sliced onions provides a nice contrast to the rich, cheesy burgers but is optional.
  • Do not move the patties while cooking to ensure a perfect sear and crust.
