Ingredients
Scale
Orange Base
- 2 cups Fresh Orange Juice (Juice from ripe oranges)
- 1 tablespoon Citrus Zest (Lemon, lime, or other fruits can be used)
- 1 pinch Salt (Enhances overall flavor)
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (Enhances citrus flavor)
Sugar Syrup
- 1 cup Sugar (Substitute with honey or agave for a healthier touch)
- 1 cup Water (For sugar syrup)
Cream Component
- 1 cup Heavy Cream (Can substitute with half-and-half or dairy-free milk)
Garnish
- 1 handful Fresh Mint Leaves (Adds a refreshing herbal twist)
- 1 cup Berries (Chopped strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)
Instructions
- Prepare fresh orange juice and zest: Juice ripe oranges until you gather about 2 cups of fresh orange juice. Additionally, zest a couple of oranges to add bright citrus notes to your sherbet.
- Make the sugar syrup: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves. Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature before use.
- Combine ingredients: Mix the cooled sugar syrup with the fresh orange juice and citrus zest in a large bowl. Add a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to enhance and balance the flavors.
- Add creaminess: Gradually incorporate 1 cup of heavy cream into the orange mixture. Stir gently but thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well blended, creating the sherbet’s creamy texture.
- Chill and freeze: Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency. Alternatively, place the mixture in a shallow dish and freeze, stirring every 30 minutes until firm and creamy.
- Serve and garnish: Scoop the sherbet into bowls or cones. Garnish each serving with fresh mint leaves, a sprinkle of orange zest, and a handful of chopped berries to add refreshing herbal and fruity bursts of flavor.
Notes
- For a healthier version, substitute sugar with honey or agave syrup in the sugar syrup step.
- You can replace heavy cream with half-and-half or a dairy-free milk alternative to accommodate dietary preferences.
- If you don’t have an ice cream maker, freezing in a shallow dish with intermittent stirring works well to achieve a smooth texture.
- Use fresh citrus zest and juice for the best flavor; avoid bottled juice or dried zest.
- Serve immediately after freezing for soft sherbet or allow to harden slightly for a firmer texture.
