  • Author: Julian
  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole is a savory and slightly sweet morning delight featuring layers of bread, ham, and Swiss cheese soaked in a maple-infused egg custard, baked to golden perfection. It’s a comforting, easy-to-make casserole ideal for family breakfasts or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
  • 8 slices of ham
  • 1 ½ cups of shredded Swiss cheese

Custard Mixture

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer Bread: Cut the bread slices into cubes. Place half of these cubes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Add Ham and Cheese Layers: Lay the ham slices over the bread cubes, then sprinkle half of the shredded Swiss cheese on top.
  4. Mix Custard: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  5. Pour Custard: Pour half of the egg mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish.
  6. Repeat Layers: Repeat with the remaining bread cubes, ham, and Swiss cheese, then pour the remaining egg mixture over the top.
  7. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes to allow the casserole to set.
  8. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until the casserole is fully set and golden brown on top.

Notes

  • You can substitute whole wheat bread for white for a healthier option.
  • Ensure the casserole is set in the middle by inserting a knife; it should come out clean when fully cooked.
  • Maple syrup adds a subtle sweetness that complements the savory ham and cheese perfectly.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best results.
