  • Author: Julian
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 4-5 servings 1x

Description

This Juicy Hamburger Steak Bake is an easy and comforting family dinner that features flavorful seared hamburger patties baked in a rich onion and beef gravy. With simple ingredients and straightforward steps, this dish delivers mouthwatering results perfect for any night.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Patties

  • pounds (680 g) ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • ½ cup (60 g) plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Bake and Gravy

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cups (480 ml) low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons (16 g) flour
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Prep and Grease: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease your baking dish with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  2. Mix the Patty Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to ensure tender patties without overworking the meat.
  3. Shape and Sear Patties: Divide the beef mixture into 4-5 equal portions and shape each into oval patties. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the patties for 2-3 minutes per side until nicely browned. This step develops flavor and locks in juices.
  4. Prepare the Baking Dish: Spread the sliced onions evenly across the bottom of your greased baking dish. Arrange the seared hamburger patties on top of the onions to build a flavor base for the bake.
  5. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute to form a roux. Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Simmer the mixture for 3-4 minutes until thickened into a rich gravy.
  6. Bake the Dish: Pour the prepared beef gravy evenly over the patties and onions in the baking dish. Cover with foil to retain moisture and bake for 25 minutes. Then uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes to brown the top and complete cooking.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
  • Do not overmix the meat to keep patties tender.
  • Searing the patties before baking enhances the flavor through caramelization.
  • Use low-sodium beef broth to control salt levels in the dish.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
