  • Author: Julian
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This Steak Sandwich recipe features tender, thinly sliced steak cooked to perfection, layered with caramelized onions and creamy Havarti cheese, all nestled in a buttered baguette. Enhanced with a homemade garlic dill herb butter and finished under the broiler for melty cheese, this sandwich offers a flavorful and satisfying meal perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Herb Butter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed

Steak and Vegetables

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb steak
  • 1 tbsp salt, or to taste
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced into half rings

Assembly

  • 4 slices Havarti cheese
  • 1 baguette, sliced lengthwise

Instructions

  1. Prepare Herb Butter: In a bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with crushed garlic cloves and diced fresh dill. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients form a smooth, uniform herb butter. Set aside for assembly.
  2. Slice Steak: For easier slicing, place the steak in the freezer for a few minutes until firm but not frozen solid. Then slice the steak into thin strips, ensuring even thickness for quick cooking.
  3. Cook Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the sliced beef, season generously with salt, and cook until the edges turn golden brown and the steak is cooked to your desired doneness. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Sauté Onions: Using the same skillet, add the sliced yellow onions and sauté over medium heat. Continue cooking until the onions become golden brown and caramelized, then remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Assemble Sandwich: Slice the baguette lengthwise. Spread the prepared herb butter evenly over both cut sides of the bread. Layer the cooked steak strips evenly on the bottom half of the baguette, followed by the sautéed onions. Top with slices of Havarti cheese.
  6. Broil Sandwich: Place the assembled sandwich open-faced under the broiler in your oven. Broil for about 2 minutes or until the Havarti cheese melts and becomes bubbly. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  7. Serve: Remove the sandwich from the oven and serve it immediately while warm for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Freezing the steak briefly makes slicing thin strips easier and more uniform.
  • Adjust salt according to taste, especially if using salted butter or salted steak cuts.
  • You can substitute Havarti cheese with other melting cheeses like Swiss or provolone for variation.
  • Broil the sandwich carefully as cheese can burn quickly under high heat.
  • Leftover herb butter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week and used for other dishes.
