  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This Easy Salisbury Steak recipe features tender ground beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. Perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner, it combines simple ingredients like ground beef, breadcrumbs, and Worcestershire sauce with a homemade gravy made from sautéed mushrooms, onions, and beef broth for a classic American dish everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 16 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Patty Preparation: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, finely diced onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently to incorporate all ingredients without overworking the meat.
  2. Form Patties: Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each into an oval patty. Create a small dimple in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned and cooked through. Remove patties from skillet and keep warm.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and onions, sautéing until softened and browned. Stir in flour to form a roux and cook for about a minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Add Liquids: Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened to a gravy consistency.
  6. Finish: Return the cooked patties to the skillet with the gravy. Simmer together for 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld and patties to warm through. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, spooning the mushroom and onion gravy over the top. Ideal alongside mashed potatoes or your favorite vegetables.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef to ensure the patties stay juicy and flavorful.
  • Creating a dimple in the patties helps them cook evenly without puffing up.
  • Be careful not to overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, simmer it longer to reduce or add a bit more flour when making the roux.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat patties gently with gravy on the stove to prevent drying out.
